Being involved in the agriculture
industry doesn't necessarily mean getting your hands dirty on a daily basis.
Rebecca Harper talked to three young Wellington professionals who have all
taken very different career paths but are united in their passion for the
agricultural industry.
TB: killer disease
There are two letters that used to
strike fear into many farmers hearts: Tb. The prospect of an infected cattle
herd, whether it is beef or dairy, is enough to make grown men cry. Although
infection rates have plummeted there is still a real threat of the disease
appearing with no warning and in places not expected to be high risk. That's
exactly what Quintin and Debi Watts experienced three years ago, and they have
lived through the nightmare ever since.
West Coast crusader:
As a hunter Katie Milne has
heard the claims against 1080. As a farmer she knows too well the depredations
of bovine Tb. As a New Zealander she loves the native forest that sprawls
across these ranges almost to her front door.
Shepherd's delight:
Big country, huge mobs of sheep and
cattle and long days working dogs are what makes Ngamatea station, on the
Napier Taihape road, so attractive to young shepherds. Training is both
encouraged and rewarded on the 75,000 stock unit station and almost all of the
11 full time staff are involved in some kind of AgITO course
Cut a track
Jansen Travis is a bloke carving a name
for himself in sheep and beef farming circles.
Plus:
Rally driver Ben Jagger, Zumo coffee's Dan Slattery, Young Blood's Jay Mutton
and Hannah Rolfe, how to maintain a drench gun, the perils of Parvo for your
pup, deciphering stem cells and all the action from NZ Young Farmers.
